Connecting Claude as an App connection

If you are using Claude (chat) as your AI Assistant, you can connect it to Frnd as an App connection. This guide shows you how.

The terminology used by Claude is a connector which corresponds to what we call an App connection. The technical term behind this is an MCP connection. So when you read this (and other guides), know that these 3 concepts are different sides of the same coin. That is... if it had 3 sides.

The set-up is a one-time task: Add Frnd as a custom connector once, connect it, and it is ready to use in your chats.

The screenshots are mostly from Claude's web app.

Note: You need an account with Claude to configure this. A free account is sufficient – the Free plan allows one custom connector.

  1. Add a custom connector

Connectors are Claude's name for external services it can reach – Frnd will be one of them.

    1. In Claude's sidebar, click Customize.
    2. On the Customize page, pick the Connectors tab.
    3. Frnd is not in the connector directory – instead, click Add in the top right.
  2. Fill in the connector details

Claude now asks for a few details about the connector, spread over two small pages.

    1. Name: anything you like – Frnd is a fine choice.
    2. Server address: https://app.frnd.dk/mcp/v1
    3. Click Continue.
    4. On the second page, Claude has already detected the right settings: Authentication Sign in now, OAuth client Register automatically. Leave everything as it is.
    5. Click Add.
  3. Connect to Frnd

Frnd is now on your connector list, but not connected yet. Click Connect.

  4. Authorize with Frnd

Claude now sends you to Frnd, where you approve the connection – this is the OAuth sign-in.

    1. Frnd asks you to authorize Claude. You can give the session a label (e.g. "Claude") so you can recognize it later. Click Approve.
    2. Enter your encryption passphrase and click Continue. This is the passphrase that encrypts your confidential details.
      • If this is your first App connection, you will be asked to create it here.
  5. Check the connection

Back in Claude, the connector page lists the abilities you have enabled in Frnd as tools.

For each tool you decide when Claude may use it: freely (Always allow), only after asking you (Needs approval), or not at all (Blocked). This is yet another layer of control, should you want one.

The dropdown next to a group sets all of its tools in one go.

  6. Use it in a chat

That is it – no further switches to flip. Ask away, and Claude reaches your connected services through Frnd.

When a tool is set to Needs approval, Claude stops and asks before using it – deny it, allow it once, or allow it from now on.

Changed your abilities in Frnd?

Claude can reload the list of tools from an MCP connector. So when you change your abilities in Frnd – rename one, enable or disable one, add or remove one – just refresh the list: On the connector page, open the ⋮ menu and pick Refresh tools list.

No reconnecting needed.
